Rest Dad,

Finally rest because you can finally be with your Valentine.

Thank you for finding your beautiful bride.

Thank you for having your faith and for sharing it with me.

Thank you for the greatest gift, my beautiful brothers and sisters.

Thank you for teaching me the importance of family and tradition.

Thank you for always correcting my English.

Thank you for being a best friend to my husband.

Thank you for being such a loving Pap to my girls.

My love and appreciation for you grew deeper as I have had to take a breath and slow down to care for you over the years. I have learned so much about he man, husband, and father that you were. Every doctor, nurse, and caregiver had no choice but to become attached to you and your kind, gentle soul.

I believe that you are now in a place where your body and mind are strong with no more worries or confusion. You will REST IN PEACE and we will all rest peacefully knowing that you and mom are watching us and helping us to continue the traditions that you both helped create and to help us share our love with each other.

Love,

Tina

“I JUST WANT TO GO HOME”

When I think about the life of my grandfather, Mr. Eugene Wade, Seamus, Jimmy or whatever you knew him as, I try my hardest not to think about his life in two different halves. I try not to think about the pre-memory struggles Pap versus the post-memory struggles Pap, but instead I think about it as one long, beautiful life.

Throughout the last week, where at any given moment there were 10-15 family members at the home of my grandmother and grandfather talking about memories they’ve had with their father, I’ve heard new stories that I have never heard. Like the time my grandfather hitchhiked from New York to Altoona, Pennsylvania. I heard about the time he won an award because he sold a million dollars in furniture during a time when a living room set cost only $400. I heard about his never ending boxing winning streak with all of his sons.

But what I want to talk about are the things I do remember and the lessons that I have learned and the memories that I have had in my lifetime with my grandfather. These lessons aren’t from the pre-memory struggles or the post-memory struggles, but instead are lessons that carried on between the two.

1.     The first lesson I learned is…when a good nap presents itself: take it and enjoy it. Now I know…this may not have been what you were expecting me to say, but to me, this is a part of life that we let go by us everyday; to allow the simple things in life to bring us joy. Day in and day out for years and years not only did Pap enjoy naps, but he also enjoyed Steeler games, Hostess cupcakes, drives to St. Francis, singing the Navy fight song, sneezes, and endless other small things that brought him joy. This is a huge lesson I am choosing to take from his life. When you enjoy something, enjoy it to it’s fullest and if you can, enjoy it every day. Whether it be a phone call to your mom, a trip to the grocery store, or even a good nap, never forget that the small things in life are often times the most rewarding and that it is okay to reward yourself.

2.     The second lesson I learned from Pap is to love hard and love deep. My grandfather, as you know, loved my grandmother beyond words. To him, she was his forever valentine, the love of his life, and I quote, “the most beautiful woman in the world.” Luckily for me, I got to witness this love first hand although I know not everyone did. For those of you that didn’t, their love was strong enough to ripple down through their children and I am guessing that if you are here today you’ve either seen their love first hand or are witnessing it everyday through Gary, Frank, Teri, Rob, Tim, Kevin or Tina. Through them and the rest of his and my family, I am sure that all of you here know the love that I am talking about. This is a love that I hope that I not only find someday, but we all do. My grandfather protected her in his own ways, loved her immensely, and to his very last day they were together with a special bond.

3.     The third lesson I learned is to love your family; simple as that. Love them today, love them tomorrow, and love them forever. Pap always made sure to know what was going on in each person’s life and to spread it so everyone knew just how proud he was. I remember times when our youngest cousin Dominic would have a good game in football and he would make sure to tell us all or when Uncle Tim would get a new car or sell a new house and Pap made sure we knew about it. He was always so proud of each and every one of us. As time went on, he was still proud and he still loved us, but instead he showed it in a different way. He asked day in and day out to know when Tim and Teri and Frank were coming home, when Tu was coming over to help him with his nails and when his best pal Anthony was coming to cut his hair. As a side note, I do have to mention how much my father, Anthony, and Pap loved each other and the bond that these two had was one like no other. One that I know was envied by most and a bond that I believe kept my grandfather alive for years. So on behalf of all of us dad, thank you. Continuing on…Pap didn’t just love us all individually, but as a whole as well. Whenever we asked him for years what he wanted for Christmas we always got the same answer, “For everyone to be home.” So that’s what we did for him, we brought in the lot from all over the world and you know what? The smile on his face when he said, “Everybody’s home,” was worth the hours of travel it took to get to him.

All in all, I think the message is clear here; love yourself, love your spouse, and love your family. Love is something that Pap never had a shortage of and I think that has been very apparent to everyone in his life. His smile and his jokes were often times enough to light up a whole room and have everyone laughing. While we all know Pap liked a little bit of attention as we saw time and time again as he would pretend to cough and then give us a wink, the special thing about him was the attention he was receiving when he didn’t even know it. The amount of time we spent learning from him and loving him is immeasurable. I do have to finish with one last thing. As I sat in his peaceful room no more than 24 hours before Pap passed on to be with his wife, I was sitting in his room with Uncle Tim listening to Glen Miller. Uncle Tim was talking to Pap saying, “Hey dad, listen it’s Glen Miller.” He went on, “Wasn’t he good, Dad? Wasn’t he great?” And in that moment I felt a shift. He wasn’t talking about how good and great Glen Miller was, but instead how good and great Mr. Eugene Wade was; how good and great he was as a husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.

Thank you all for spending your week with us talking about this wonderful man. I hope that you all have the same amazing memories that we all do.

I will love you forever, Pap. Tell Grandma I said hello.

Love,

Christine

“I JUST WANT TO GO HOME”

Sitting down to write this, my mind goes blank. I don't even know where to begin. Writing this for my grandma when she passed was hard enough, but losing the second half of the greatest love story I’ve ever heard is quite tough. My grandpa was one of my biggest blessings in life. When I was little he never really spoke, but his presence was always welcoming. As I grew up, and as he did too, I began to see how special of a person he truly was. I began hearing the stories of his life and how he endured so much hardship. And, I began to see a person that I looked up to in too many ways to count. As time went on and pap got sick our relationship grew even more. Although he couldn't remember my name all the time, I felt a connection with him that I know I won’t have with anyone else.

One thing I am most thankful for is being able to be a part of his care. He taught me so much just by letting me take care of him. I also loved having this role because I got to see him and make sure that I was doing everything I could to keep him comfortable as possible. In these times, we got to laugh together, cry together, and enjoy the littlest parts of life together. A good day was a great day and a bad day was still a good day because I got to see and speak to one of my favorite men. I also got to listen to his stories, which I learned so much from. He taught me how important family is, how to push through life even when you think it can’t get any worse, and that smiling is the best medicine. And together, my grandpa and grandma taught me how to love and live life to its very fullest.

The times spent with pap were the best times. He was my sunshine on a rainy day. No matter what was happening, when I saw him everything seemed simple and the only thing that mattered was that moment together. All I ever wanted was to make sure he was happy and now I know he his.

My heart is broken and I will miss my pap with every bone in my body for all the days to come, but I know he is with grandma and I couldn't be happier for them. They finally get to love each other for eternity while being healthy in Heaven.

Pap, thank you for giving me the best family I could ever dream of having, especially my mother who I could not possibly live without. Thank you for serving and protecting our country. Thank you for showing me strength and perseverance. Thank you for being my best bud. It has been the greatest honor to be your grandchild.

Give grandma hugs and kisses from me. I already miss you both more than I could ever describe. You will never be forgotten Mr. Wade.

I love you a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck. I will be seeing you.

Love,

Victoria

“I JUST WANT TO GO HOME”

Dad,

The lessons learned as your son where unique, challenging, tough and extremely valuable. You taught me that good things come from hard work and sacrifice. You taught me that life is not fair or very kind at times, but if you persevere great things can happen. You taught me to stay positive, never give up and to Love those around you. Never stop loving. Never, no matter what.

The funny thing is that you had no idea you were teaching as you struggled through life’s challenges. I paid attention. It all made me better and I will continue to learn from the subtle lessons you taught me. The most important and ever lasting lesson you taught me was - family first. Provide to the best of your ability and give it all to your family. No matter what the take, give it. Don’t ask for anything in return. Somehow and someway, it will come back to you.

Dad, I tried to  give it back in every way I knew how, but somehow I am left with much more than I ever gave you.

Thank you for the lessons and all the love. Thank you for moving from Brooklyn to Cambria County to fulfill God’s plan to “accidentally” meet Mom and to eventually form this crazy family. Your actions, your efforts and your lessons created so many, created something that have made so many happy and created a legacy that has and will make an impact that will prove that this world will be a much better place because you spent 87 years here.

For my remaining years, I will try to make you proud and live up to the precedent set by you.

You did not do it like everyone else- for that I am forever grateful and in my opinion, a much better man for it. No Dad could of ever done it better. Not sure you always meant for everything to be a lesson, but it worked. With all my heart, thank you! Dad, thanks- say hi to Mom. Rest. Both of you, finally rest!

Love,  Keb.

“I JUST WANT TO GO HOME”

I am thankful, Gene, for the many years of fond memories. I will forever smile when I think of your many funny stories- like you... and the sleeping student... and the squirt gun. I have missed our daily calls just to check in...you always had some new information to share.

Thanks for being the ultimate reminder that when one door closes, another opens somewhere. “Life is not always easy” would be an understatement in your world, yet you always kept putting one foot in front of other, taking life day by day and making the best of things. You taught us through the years, especially the last years, to cherish the simple pleasures, live in the moment , and express whatever we are feeling-even if it means crying just because we are so happy. It was such a pleasure to see the joy and pride that your kids and grandkids brought you. They are also proud of you and proud to carry on your legacy of strength. “Anchors Aweigh, my boy, Anchors Aweigh!” I am missing you, but am so glad that you are finally truly “home.”

Love you,

Mandy

“I JUST WANT TO GO HOME”

My grandparents are the greatest grandparents a kid could ask for. Although their physical bodies aren't here with us, they're still by our side and in our hearts. I'm already missing Pap, but I'm so happy he gets to be his true self and is now reunited with his other half. I'm so lucky for every moment I got to spend with Pap and Grandma to learn from them, laugh with them and just be with them. Pap could always make people laugh without trying. Anyone who saw the unconditional love between he and grandma was changed by it. When you walked into 61 Hastings, you were home. Even if you weren't family when you came in, you were when you left. They taught us that although life can sometimes seem impossibly difficult, everything is always all right because of love.

Looking back on the year I spent living with Pap and Grandma, I imagine the sun was shining in through the windows everyday, because there was so much joy there. I want to share a couple short memories during that year. One was during dinner. Grandma pointed to my posture then to Paps. We both had our right elbow on the table, left arm down on the table, hunched down over our food. It was funny.

We were lucky that the dementia affected him the way it did, because it could have been much worse. He could have been an angry man. But he wasn't. One time the disease got the better of him and he raised his voice at me. I went up to my room, slightly hurt but knowing it wasn't him. It was the dementia. A couple minutes later pap knocks on the door. He hadn't been upstairs in years. And he walked all the way upstairs by himself to tell me he was sorry. He was filled with so much love. And that love spreads through the whole family. I love you Pap. Give Grandma a hug for me.

Love,

Laura

“I JUST WANT TO GO HOME”

Pap with the suspenders, you have given me countless joyous memories- from playing checkers against me, and never letting me win, to sharing ice cream with you, that it is hard to think that I will never see you again on this side. But if there is one thing I will always remember and live by it is being content with the simple things. Whether it was watching a Steelers Superbowl from 1979, and still being as into it as you were when it happened, to simply having a Boost, you, pap, were smiling through it all. That is the way I intend on living. Thank you for that priceless lesson that can only be taught through your actions. Don’t take any wooden nickels up there pap, and give grandma a hug for me.

Love you,

Dominic

“I JUST WANT TO GO HOME”

Gene

I am grateful to have had Gene as my father-in-law as he had opened heart and home to me from day one I was introduced to the family. Over the years I got to know him as a gentle person fully dedicated to his wife and family. He was happy with the simple things in life. He loved the best when we were all together in his home in Oakdale around the dining table, laughing and telling stories. I have wonderful memories of the trips to Europe, Amsterdam, Paris, Italy and Southern Spain. When I think of Gene I think of Pittsburgh Steelers, suspenders, ice cream, cars, Christmas…He will be missed.

All my love,

Jos

“I JUST WANT TO GO HOME”

Pap,

I remember when you used to call the house around 5:00pm everyday and if we didn’t answer you would keeping calling just to say hiiiii (in your cute voice) , I miss all our phone conversations.  I loved when My Dad and I surprised you and grandma with a visit and you cried when you saw us because you were happy. One of my best memories is when Henry and I took you to genoskis and we let you give us directions the whole way and you did it, we also let you drink pop late at night when we weren’t supposed to you always kept our secrets so we didn’t get in trouble you’d say “don’t tell Mickey” I will miss you and all of our laughs, I am happy you are with grandma send, us butterflies until we meet again,

Bushel and a peck,

Love, Madison

“I JUST WANT TO GO HOME”

Pap,

I will forever be grateful for this wonderful family that you and Grandma created and the memories we have all been able to share together. Looking back at all the memories, I cannot help but laugh when visualizing the Wade clan traveling through the European countryside in a van whose windows did not open, and air conditioning did not work; or when you managed to sleep through the thunderstorm in Patton as all the sirens blared through the town.  I remember thinking you were magic when you came to Grand Lake and taught me and my sister how to find water by digging a hole in the sand.  I will forever cherish these times we spent together and know that you and Grandma will be together watching over us.

I love you a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck ♥

Love,  Lexi

“I JUST WANT TO GO HOME”

To my pap with the suspenders:

You have taught me that family is everything. Appreciate and love the family that you have, talk about how much you miss them when you are not with them, and be filled with so much happiness when you are with them that you are brought to tears.

You have taught me to enjoy the little things in life. From eating butter pecan ice cream, watching the Steelers game, and to singing a song from the navy with your family. Everything thing in this life is what you make it.

To be strong and never stop fighting. You have been a fighter for your country, your family, and your own health. You have taught me that whenever you think you cannot get back up and nobody else thinks that you can either, prove them wrong.

Thank you for the times that you forgot my face, because that gave us time to live in the present. Love you, please give grandma a hug for me.

Love Nicole.

“I JUST WANT TO GO HOME”

Gene Wade ... an amazing man and equally amazing family. The love he inspired runs deep throughout the generations of his family and is an incomprehensible miracle that must be experienced. A true family man and Veteran that I am grateful for having spent time with.

“I JUST WANT TO GO HOME”

Dad,

You were the strongest man I knew. You were dealt so many different cards and made sure you you took care of everyone and everything. You taught us all how to live our dreams and succeed. You taught us how to think. I used to get so upset when I couldn’t spell a word and you would tell me to look it up in the dictionary. I said. “How am I suppose to look it up if I can’t spell it”. You would not give in. With that I learned to think and spell.

You taught me to drive In the snow that saved my life more than once. To this day I can’t imagine what parent  would put their child in the car in a snowy parking lot and say “gun it…now… Brake!”. Nerves of steel.  I learned to drive in the snow. You taught me how to spin out of a terrible situation.

When we were young Dad would make sure we didn’t miss out on anything. I never forgot the day he brought home a van he was going to “test drive “ just so he could take us to the drive in theater and have the whole experience.  He loaded us up with our pillows and blankets, popcorn and drinks. We went to the drive-in in style.

Dad showed us we could have anything we wanted if we worked hard enough for it. He and mom created a wonderful family full of love.

Thanks Dad I love you. You are now with Mom in heaven.

Teri,

“I JUST WANT TO GO HOME”

Dear Dad,

I am at peace because you are at peace. As a young boy of 6 years old I remember you as a Father, although under many stresses, always teaching me my craft. Yes even from the early days I watched as you worked with tools and repaired things around the house. I remember asking for tools for Christmas and you teaching me how to use them. I remember helping you to install a bathroom at 105 Cottonwood Drive like it was yesterday. It was because of you that I am where I am today with my business. You are the one that convinced me to per-sue the Heating and Cooling Industry. From my early days of business you would go on sales calls with me and taught me how to ask for the sale. I still use your methods today.

As a Father you showed by example what love truly is, even during the toughest of times.  At times you were a man of few words but ALWAYS had the right words and advice. Thank you for molding me into the man that I am today and I am forever grateful.

Rest In Peace Dad,

Love Robert

“I JUST WANT TO GO HOME”

Dad,

As I look back over time.

I remember and think about all that you have done for me and for all of us.

I remember your never ending sacrifices to provide the very best through good and bad times; no matter what. Your steadfast support of our successes and our challenges.  And the simple things; your friendship and one of a kind treasure chest of sayings and phrases. Most of all, I remember all the things we experienced together: Teaching me to drive (during a snow storm) and buying me my first twenty dollar car on my 16th birthday. You persuaded me to go into sales because you were certain that you saw me in you - You were so right. I remember picking you up from work late at night while thoroughly enjoying our long talks. I remember our trip to New York City (just the two of us) when your Dad passed away and most all, our incredible 6 day road trip across the country and back; which was the most quality time I ever spent with you and Mom. The list goes on and on and on. There are so many events and wonderful vivid memories etched into my mind. All shaping me into who I am today.  I will always remember you Dad, always be grateful, always love you and will miss you dearly everyday.  Till we see each other again; Give Mom a kiss for me.

 Love, Tim

He was a great dad by showing his children how to spell. He never let his children down.
He has a daughter who is a
great person. I always look forward to seeing her.
He always loved his children and grandchildren and me. He always makes me and his children happy.
He loved my dad too.

Abi

“I JUST WANT TO GO HOME” Dad,

This story is longer; it reaches far back in time. YOUR history. It must be recorded. … This is the Very Short Version. Like a Movie Trailer… You, Gene Wade, the young handsome sailor, varsity guy from Brooklyn, sent away from a dramatic youth by Aunt Kitty to study for a Bachelor of Economics at Saint Francis College, playing the trombone in the Big Band and dancing with a young local girl to the Glenn Miller Orchestra.  You married that darling: You were the college grad, married an immigrant’s daughter. Something like My Big Fat Greek Wedding. Only Italian.

You two soon became vital, energetic, passionate, fun young parents. You, the father of two little boys in the American Dream of the 1960’s, with an innocent beautiful bride, a new ranch home, a two-tone Plymouth, dining room set of Solid Cherry and a white Hollywood bedroom set.

You had endless energy and unbridled dreams.  Sunday drives, croquet and barbecues for the entire neighborhood.  Your work? Opening new territory.  Industrial air conditioning had just been born. We moved to Tennessee, a time and place that you loved.  Do you recall your venture into the Smokey Mountains to sell heating systems and came back home reporting that he hillbillies lit the dirt paths by lighting the natural gas coming out of the pipes stuck into the ground?  Standard, National Radiator put you on an expense account.  You soared.  Then…. You and Mom lost a baby, or was it two?  And then came Teri Jo, your princess, rebel and later in life an amazing caregiver.  But, then, the world was changing, companies merged, pressures mounted and you lost your job: Your first “nervous breakdown”. Then the world stopped. Medication, shock treatments. Mental health care was in the “trial and error phase”. You were a patient and a victim. Mellori calmed you. Always pills in your pocket. The world blurred.

You must remember when we sold the house In Geistown, and moved in with Grams.  It must have broken your heart and soul.  But you found your way. You made your own vegetable garden the size of Central Park: Competing with Grams from Calabria, who called you the “city farmer”. You organized the Boy Scouts.  You built mom a beautiful new kitchen with your own hands, plumbing, wiring, the only dishwasher in town …and a bathroom for Grams! The kitchen, the comfort room at 611 South Third Avenue.  Photos from the current occupant at the kitchen bar you invented using the old porch post were recently on Facebook.

It must have been exciting and daunting when you went back to school, with 4 kids and no money.  A new career: Teaching in English and Economics. We woke up early. Now 5 children, and you in mom’s freshly ironed shirts, off to school. Those bitter cold Patton winters. Remember when I refused to walk to school because it was so cold outside. You told Mom that you would walk with me. 10 minutes later, you and I returned home. We sat in front of the kitchen oven, warming our fingers and toes and laughing when the radio announced. “NO SCHOOL TODAY”.

Remember when you explained to me how babies were made. “Simple, you said.. It just happens when two people love each other a whole lot.”. I trusted you.

Remember the Lamplighter interview. You got the new job in “Pittsburgh”.  You found the perfect small town of Oakdale, in many ways a copy of Patton. Another new career with Anchor Supply.  I rejected the move, I was 12 and missed my friends and Grams.  You took me back to live with her with my bicycle and a picture of my family.  I still have the picture.  Remember that ride back to the mountains? You told me that you would miss me. You had tears in your eyes. You said I was going to take care of Grandma and that you would take care of Mom.  I trusted you.

That summer, Neil Armstrong stepped foot on the moon.  When we next connected, you explained to me how this was all possible.  I trusted you.

You tried to do all for the family and to enrich us with culture and music. You got all 9 of us into the Chevrolet Impala to go to the Carnegie Museum. A Sunday treat. Crossing the street I saw two men in their 20’s holding hands. I asked Mom ‘Why are those guys holding hands like that?” Her answer was firm: “Ask your Dad!’. So I did… you answered very directly: “Because they love each other”.   I trusted you.

Later that year, we were watching the news on TV; a report of the first Gay Pride in San Francisco. You said, and I will never ever forget: “Frank, you should go there sometime. You would like it:”.   I learned only later about myself, what you instinctively embraced in me.

Through high school and college I turned to you when I really needed help.  I was stranded after work in the middle of the night on Parkway West. Icy cold, windy, snowy night. My car stopped.  I found an emergency phone and called you. You said “Just keep warm, I will be there in a few minutes”.  I trusted you.  30 minutes later, we were at home in Oakdale, warming our fingers and toes in front of the kitchen oven.

Gary at Penn State and me at the The Univeristy of Pittsburgh. College guys in your footsteps.

When you faced the impossible and feared that you were losing control again, we had a long walk together, and you confided in me. At that moment you passed on the torch of responsibility to us. We became your friends, and in a bizarre way, we became the father, and you became Dad.

Our friendship grew in a beautiful direction. You made me laugh so many times. When we talked, the first thing you said was. “When are you coming home? The second question was always: “How is Jos?”.  Because if he was O.K. you knew in your heart that I was good too.

When you came twice with Mom to visit us in Europe, you were easy, absorbing everything. The tulip fields were more than colors. You wanted to know more: The market, the logistics. Italy, France, Spain and the United Kingdom. You loved to travel and loved to fly.

You took me to the Boeing 767 hangar at the airport where you proudly gave or (probably never) rejected security access for the technicians. Pointing to the huge wing, you said to me: “You have flown on that one, its in good shape, Frank!” Somehow, I trusted you.

15 years ago on the front porch at 61 Hastings with Mom, Kevin observed: “These are their Golden Years”.   He was absolutely correct.  Our last family vacation in Provincetown and North Truro in 2008: You were beaming, but disturbingly failing. Dr. Paul was with us, and advised immediate care.

What follows is another chapter: A form of dementia that allowed you to be content, happy with each day.  Greeting your caregivers with a smile and a story.  Kathy Krause at Victoria Manor left home each morning early to have breakfast waffles with you. Anthony, Tina, Rob and the entire army of helpers always reported the fun and laughs with you. Was this really dementia or another dimension?

When mom left us, your heart broke.  I recently learned of the nights of tears as those caring for you promised you would join her someday.  When in October 2017, I asked you if you were intentionally waiting for something before joining Mom in her eternal energy, you answered to the point as always: “Yes, I want to go, but I am waiting for Christmas. Everyone will be HOME!” …..As if was a complete idiot.

So Christmas brought us all together. On January 7, you began your swift decline.  The last days were a true honor for me. I was with you. Still loving music, watching football and taking in all of the love.  Three hours before you left us, you took my hands and squeezed them both so hard, as if to say: “Frank, Thank you: Your fingers are warm now, I am done”,

I love you,  Frank
